About this project

Most maps of knowledge show you a hierarchy: a discipline, its branches, and the branches below those. That is the least interesting thing about knowledge. What matters is where the branches touch — where coastal geomorphology meets disaster policy, or where remote sensing turns out to be a computer science problem wearing a geography hat.

This site maps both. The hierarchy gives you somewhere to stand. The cross-discipline links are the point.

What makes it different

Several projects do parts of this well. The UCSD Map of Science laid out 554 sub-disciplines as a fixed base map. Open Syllabus Galaxy showed how to make a hundred thousand labels legible through zoom. Connected Papers and ResearchRabbit made citation neighbourhoods explorable. O*NET and ESCO modelled occupations against skills.

None of them combine these five things in one interface:

  1. An academic hierarchy, from discipline down to sub-topic.
  2. The tools and software actually used at each node.
  3. The jobs and employers that each node leads to.
  4. Explicit cross-discipline links, each with a stated reason.
  5. A country layer — global and Bangladesh — on every fact that varies by place.

That combination is the claim. A student can start at a topic they find interesting and, without leaving the page, see what software they would learn, what job titles it maps to, roughly what those pay locally, which universities teach it, and which other fields it borders.

Why Bangladesh

Because generic global career data is close to useless for someone deciding what to study in Dhaka. A topic is universal; its job market is not. The country toggle re-queries statistics, careers and programmes without duplicating the taxonomy, so a Bangladeshi salary band and a global one sit on the same topic without competing.

Geography and Environment is built out furthest — to five levels — because that is the maintainer's own field, and depth requires expertise that cannot be automated. Other disciplines are complete but shallower.

What it is not

Who made it

Built and maintained by Jubaer, working in geography and environmental science. The taxonomy backbone comes from OpenAlex, which publishes its topic hierarchy under CC0. Everything layered on top — the tools, the careers, the employers, the verified links and their reasoning — is manual curation.
